It was at Sophie Colvin’s birthday party where I met her. I remember her as a weak, scrawny, dehydrated, abandoned kitten who had nobody but her brother to keep her company, and the Colvins, who fed her – but didn’t allow her inside.
With a lot of begging and persuading on my part, my parents finally agreed to let me keep her – as long as I did the cat litter. A minor setback – but hey, something is better than nothing.
The Colvins named her Gloria, which I found a bit too formal for a cat, so I named her Hazel. Mrs. Colvin said the name suits her, because of the golden-brown spots on her fur and her checkered face. We took her home that night and she slept with me in my room. The two of us slept peacefully toghether – until I woke up in the middle of the night because she crawled up my pyjamas and was scratching at my leg.
Ever since then, she’s gotten healthier and she grew into what I would call a really nice cat. She is very playful, hyper, and territorial. She is very mad because her mother, who abandoned her, recently gave birth to a new litter of kittens in our backyard. More than anything, she’s ticked off because we won’t let her go after them. Hazel bites and scratches too.
She’s not perfect, but life wouldn’t be the same without her.
